Motorhome Road Trip Ideas – Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is a superb option as a destination for your Avanti Motorhome adventure. New motorhome road trip ideas are sometimes hard to come by but the Isle of Wight is a tried and tested location that shouldn’t be missed. With your motorhome rental starting in Kent, you are only a few hours away from this island of natural beauty, history, and intrigue.

As far as road trip ideas go, the Isle of Wight is famous for photographer-friendly rocky cliffs, coves, bays and caves and makes it a must-see destination for any budding photographer or anyone looking for the perfect selfie setting. Anyone that took a school trip there will remember the souvenirs of glass lighthouses filled with bands of coloured sand! Historic figures connected to the Isle include Queen Victoria, Lord Alfred Tennyson and Charles Dickens. In more recent times, it has been put on the map with its vibrant music and festival scene, plus sailing events. 70 miles of coastal track offer adventure for hikers and cyclists who are spoilt for choice with cycle trails adapted from the island’s disused railway network.

The first two things customers ask us about when considering the Isle of Wight are regarding the Isle of Wight ferry crossing and the weather. Thankfully the Camping and Caravan Club membership included in your motorhome rental gives you access to special offers such as Isle of Wight Sail & Stay Deals including discounts for the ferry crossings.

If you are new to motorhome adventures, we recommend spending your first night somewhere en-route to Portsmouth that is within an hour-and-a-half drive away from your Avanti motorhome rental pick-up location and at a Caravan & Motorhome Club site, where you have all the facilities at hand and in the company of other more seasoned Motorhomers who are normally more than happy to offer some help and advice getting oriented with setting up camp. Arriving in daylight makes the whole newbie experience a little less overwhelming!
A benefit of hiring a motorhome from Avanti means that you are within 10 minutes of several key motorways allowing your journey to get off to a flying start!

Some Caravan & Motorhome Club Site options…

NIGHT 1

Alderstead Heath Caravan Club Site (45 min drive)

Why stay here …
With convenient access from the M25 motorway, and located near Merstham, Redhill, Alderstead Heath Club Campsite has a picturesque setting that you and your family will find ideal for a relaxing and peaceful holiday break. The site is surrounded by rolling wooded countryside and situated near the Pilgrims Way, so there are many lovely walking trails – in particular across the North Downs – to explore at your leisure. The caravan and motorhome site is perfect for dog walkers; you can pick up details about the Downlands Circular Walk from the site entrance. The Fox pub can also be reached by foot and is approximately 40 minutes away. The site offers the best of both worlds – its proximity to London also makes this site a great base to explore the non-stop activities of the capital.

Slinfold Caravan Club Site (1 hour drive)

Why stay here …
Planted with silver birch, rowan and flowering cherry, Slinfold Club Campsite is a gem nestled at the end of a country lane on the edge of a pretty stone-roofed village. The caravan park is ideal for a relaxing holiday break at one of our favourite West Sussex campsites, offering an amazing variety of wildlife, lovely walking trails and well-kept cycle routes, including the South Downs Link to the North Downs which follows a quaint old railway line. Slinfold Caravan Club Campsite is a haven for dogs, with many walks directly from the site and the dog-friendly Red Lyon pub only a 15 minute walk away.

Rookesbury Park Caravan Club Site (2 hour drive)

Why stay here …
Rookesbury Park Club Site is splendidly set in tranquil parkland and filled with hedges and trees in the valley, with the magnificent Forest of Bere at its edge. For restaurants, pubs and other conveniences, the caravan site puts you within easy reach of Fareham and the village of Wickham.
A good choice for those with children, part of the caravan park is reserved as a children’s play and picnic area. As the Gateway to the South Downs, the site is ideally located for shoppers and city visitors to Portsmouth and Southampton, yet also perfectly placed to enjoy country walks and the peace and tranquillity of the Forest of Bere clearings. Should you want to explore further afield, Rookesbury Park Club Site is well placed for everything from a day trip to the Isle of Wight to a longer visit in Portsmouth to see the restored ships of old (the Mary Rose, the Victory, the Warrior).
This site offers Ferry Pitches to enable easy access and departure with minimal disruption to other guests, and allow members to pitch at different times of night if departing or returning from a ferry or train trip. This pitch type can only be booked by calling the site team direct.
